Platform Engineer - Hardware Lifecycle(US Hybrid)
Orlando, Florida, USA - Contract
Job Description
This contract (US-based Corp to Corp)
This is a Hybrid role:
This is a "Hybrid 8" position and will need to be in the Atlanta area or the Tampa / Lakeland Florida area.
“The nature of this opening requires occasional physical presence on the Data Center floor to interact with equipment. This requires the resource be local to either the Atlanta or Lakeland Data Center location and will be expected to work on-site 8 days per month or more as needed.”
What we are looking for:
This role leans more toward a VMware infrastructure engineer with practical automation capability. Expectation is they can use common tools (GitHub, Ansible, Terraform), read and understand existing code, and execute or make updates as needed—leveraging AI where it makes sense. They should understand the platform objects they are working against (VCF/vSphere) and how to interact with core services (e.g., directory services, DNS, etc.), using automation to streamline operations and integrations. This is not a pure platform engineering/IaC role—more of an infrastructure engineer who can operationally leverage automation effectively within the environment.
- Regarding scripting experience, how important is PowerShell/PowerCLI proficiency compared to other scripting and automation technologies? Should we prioritize candidates with deep PowerShell experience specifically, or would strong experience with Ansible, Terraform, Python, or similar tools also be considered a strong fit?
Yes to all. VCF PowerCLI knowledge would be optimal for reading and executing safely. However, we do not use vRealize Automation in our environment. Operational familiarity with Ansible, Terarform, and Python is useful along with being comfortable working with JSON files.
Of the VMware technologies listed (VCF, NSX-T, vSAN, vROPS, vRLI, SDDC Manager, etc.),
which are the most critical for success in this role? If a candidate is strong in VMware Cloud Foundation and NSX-T but lacks experience with some of the supporting products, would they still be considered?
Must have upgrade and maintenance experience across all VCF components, including HCX and Site Recovery Manager. Administrative experience is also required for all products except for NSX-T, vRNI, and vDefend, which fall under the Network, Network Segmentation, and Security teams. However, we do assist with upgrades and maintenance of these appliances.
Approximately what percentage of the role is focused on operational support and infrastructure administration versus engineering, modernization, automation development, and cloud transformation initiatives?
Approximately 80% or more of the role is focused on executing planned work developed, along with handling Tier 1 incidents and unplanned ad hoc work. The remaining ~20% is focused on improving current processes & documentation, usually identified during execution of the day-to-day work.
Work Description and Responsibilities:
Infrastructure Product Engineering involves the operational execution, support, capacity optimization, automation development, and documentation management of the on-premise private cloud environment to sustain platform health, enable VM cloud modernization, accelerate strategic initiatives, and maximize infrastructure value.
Execute VM right-sizing reductions in coordination with application teams, including OS-level resource validation, approval workflows, and progress reporting through dashboards.
Execute and coordinate VM cloud modernization conversions including replication transitions with federation enabled, requiring capacity assessments, JSON conversions/validations, runbook updates, and pipeline execution for VMs in scope.
Track, maintain, and coordinate ongoing platform efforts including host upgrades, security patches, appliance deployments/upgrades, and upgrade readiness validation across all environments.
Create, maintain, track, and clean up purpose-built VMs and environments in Sandbox used for POC efforts, upgrade path testing, and security hardening validation.
Assist peer engineers with backlog of POC projects, vendor provided fixes/updates, and/or security findings to be validated in Sandbox environments.
Maintain and enhance capacity analytics dashboards, ADO board hygiene, and baseline metrics tracking to support project executions and meet delivery timelines.
Develop and extend automation for compliance remediation, host build processes, and operational workflows through scripting and pipeline development.
Create, peer review, and maintain documentation including automation runbooks/playbooks, operational procedures, and onboarding materials to reduce tribal knowledge dependencies and align for agentic AI readiness.
Special Qualifications:
Experience with the full VMware Cloud Foundation solution.
Experience with Multi-Site Private/Public Cloud design with working knowledge of Dynamic Capacity, High Availability, Disaster Recovery, and Site Recovery, and NSX-T federation.
Experience using a single ADO board to support hybrid delivery, applying Kanban for operations and Agile practices for automation and development, and extending this experience across others through example and shared practices.
Experience with platform infrastructure and Guest VM automation.
Contract Terms:
- Initial 6-month contract to start (Approx: 1040 standard hours)
- Working hours: 8 am - 4:30 pm (EST). The contractor must work the EST time zone.
- Corp to Corp engagement only. The contractor must work via a corp.
